Inaugural Conference 2019
On 3rd June 2019 Women in Surgery Scotland held its inaugural conference at RCS Edinburgh with the theme ‘celebrating the successes of women in surgery’. Our first speaker (Dr Elaine Thomson) took us back to the first women to study medicine in Britain – The Edinburgh Seven – and the prejudices and injustices they overcame in order to pursue a medical career.
From there we were joined by eight fabulous and passionate speakers from a breadth of surgical specialties covering topics such as LTFT, returning to work, casual feminism [in male surgeons] and leadership roles in the NHS. We were especially delighted to welcome Dame Clare Marx – the first female chair of the GMC – as our keynote speaker.
